It was the first musical ballad released by the band.Some people consider the lyrical theme to be about a person who has decided to commit suicide; others do not share this view. In an interview with lead vocalist James Hetfield on the set of the production "MTV Icon: Metallica" in 2005, he does recall how himself and bandmate Lars Ulrich were obsessed with death at the time the album and song were produced.
