Suonano:Mark Knopfler - voce e chitarraGuy Fletcher - tastiera, piano e clavinetGlenn Worf - bassoDanny Cummings - batteriaCon il prezioso contributo di:Chuck Ainlay - ingegnere del suonoChris White - sax, clarinetto e flautoFrank Ricotti - vibrafonoIan Lowthian - fisarmonicaSteve Sidwell - trombaJohn McCusker - violinoI'm a maker of ballads right prettyI write theme right here in the streetYou can buy theme all over the cityYours for a penny a sheetI'm a word pecker out of the printersOut of the dens of Gin LaneI'll write up a scene on a counterConfessions and sins in the main boys confession and sins in the mainThen you'll find me in Madame Geneva's keeping the demons at bayThere's nothing like gin for drowning them in but they'll always be back on a hanging dayOn a hanging dayThey come rattling over the cobblesThey sit on their coffins of blackSome are struck dumb some gabbleTop-heavy on brandy or sackThe pews are all full of fine fellowsAnd the hawker has set up her shopAs they're turning them at the gallowsShe'll be selling right under the drop boys selling right under the dropThen you'll find me in Madame Geneva'sKeeping the demons at bayThere's nothing like gin for drowning them inBut they'll always be back on a hanging dayOn a hanging daySono uno scrittore di ballate proprio belleLe scrivo proprio qui nella stradaLe potete comprare per tutta la cittàSono vostre per un penny al foglioSono uno che scrive parole che non sono pubblicateFuori dai covi di Gin LaneScriverò un resoconto preciso su un pallottoliereConfessioni e peccati principalmenteConfessioni e peccati principalmenteAllora potete trovarmi da Madame GenevaA tenere i demoni a badaNon c'è niente di meglio del gin per annegarliMa loro torneranno sempre il giorno che sei sobrioIl giorno che sei sobrioArrivano facendo rumore sui ciottoliSi siedono sulle loro bare dipinte di neroAlcuni sono ammutoliti alcuni balbettanoUbriachi di brandy o di saccheggioI banchi sono pieni di bei tipiE la venditrice ambulante ha messo su il suo negozioMentre loro si impiccano alla forcaLei venderà la sua merce proprio sotto la botola del patibolo ragazziVenderà la sua merce proprio sotto la botola del patiboloAllora potete trovarmi da Madame GenevaA tenere i demoni a badaNon c'è niente di meglio del gin per annegarliMa loro torneranno sempre il giorno che sei sobrioIl giorno che sei sobrio
