SET OF NORWEGIAN HARDANGER FIDDLE TUNES!Two of my favourite Norwegian "Hallings", played on my FUNKIEST fiddle! The artwork painted on it is courtesy of Ken Thompson, of Hobgoblin Music, Manchester, & the amazing pearl-encrusted fingerboard is courtesy of Bruceweiart EBay store. The actual fiddle started off life, as a horrible "toffee apple" varnish-encrusted Stentor model I picked up for just £60!!!I apologise in advance for my somewhat "unpolished" performance - I am entirely self-taught in all the instruments I play!IMPORANT!!! Hardanger Fiddles - 2008 7-Lag Stevne BanquetA Hardanger fiddle (or in Norwegian: hardingfele) is a traditional stringed instrument, similar to a violin, used originally to play the music of Norway. These players are part of the Twin Cities Hardingfelelag - www.tchardingfelelag.org/ - they performed at the annual 7-Lag Stevne in Stevens Point, Wisconsin in July, 2008."Stevne" is the Norwegian term for a convention, meeting, or rally."Lag" is a Norwegian word that has many meanings, one of them being "a group of people". Besides Sigdalslag, there are 31 other lags which cover other geographic areas of Norway. Norway Hardanger Fjord Boat Ride FyksesundWe rode the Hardanger Fjordreiser boat on the Fyksesund Fjord, a finger of the Hardanger Fjord. It cost 80 kroner (about $16)for the 2 hour ride. The farthest point was Botnen or Kannikeberg where my grt grt grandpa Torger lived. The bridge you see at the beginning is in the Rykken book on page 112. We were going to take a private boat but it was rainy. People on the video: Darene (mom), Synnøve, Edvard, Marthe, Arne, Dave (dad).

Norheimsund il Hardanger- Baune 1.omgang del 4Treningsleir 2008 TyrkiaHi - Here's a short sampling of a few of the simple folk instruments whoseconstruction is detailed on my webpage at http://DennisHavlena.comThis video was made in my back yard, on the spur of the moment and is not intendedto be fancy music -- just to show some of the instruments, which include -- in order:- 3 string cookie-tin banjo with weed- whip line strings. Tune is "the Cuckoo".- "Tambiro" made from a new (never-been-filled) 20 Lb. propane tank. Building this instrument gave me the idea for inventing my propane tank "hank drum" (a humble alternative to the hang drum)- My "Fiddle-Gurdy" combination fiddle & Hurdy Gurdy. Much fun! I apologize for the squeak here and there -- I was impatient to get things on Youtube. Tune is an old French Canadian Voyageur's melody, "En Roullant Ma Boulle".Inspiration from Yuichi Onoue's "Kaisatsuko".- My 4-string, full sized wash-tub bass. Holds it's own nicely in a band situation.- Simple Hardanger fiddle conversion. 4 strings playing & 4 strings sympathetic that run through a tunnel carved into the underside of the fingerboard. Tunes are "Road to Boston" (aka "Col. Greene's March") and "Over the Waterfall".- Low D Tin-Whistle made from a shower-curtain rod for a few dollars. Tune is made up on the spot (& it sounds it!).- Octave Mandolin (aka bozouki, cittern) converted from an old guitar. Tune is the"Boys of Bluehill" hornpipe.PS: I just put another short video onYouTube of my PVC tubing instrument thatplays like a hang drum, at this web address:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5dD4KkJcAwPS: Also see my propane-tank hank drum at:http://youtube.com/watch?v=bpMS15kJyOY&mode=related&search=My webpage describing building these instruments is at this URL:http://DennisHavlena.comThanks!PLEASE NOTE: A real, Swiss-made hang drum is VERY difficult to obtain these days. A ray of hope is on the horizon however--Pantheon Steel, a maker of beautiful steel drums ("steel pans") is researching and experimenting -- with the intention of producing hang drums (under a different name) for sale. Please contact them at pantheonsteel.com and encourage them! They're looking for signs of interest at this time. Dennis
