A los catorce, estudio composición, teoría y contrapunto con los maestros Jacob Gimpel y Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Goldsmith ingresó a la Universidad del Sur de California, con el maestro Miklós Rózsa, quien escribió la partitura de la película Recuerda de 1945 con Ingrid Bergman.
