Tangible Functional ProgrammingGoogle Tech TalksNovember, 7 2007ABSTRACT We present a user-friendly approach to unifying program creation and execution, based on a notion of "tangible values" (TVs), which are visual and interactive manifestations of pure values, including functions. Programming happens by gestural composition of TVs. Our goal is to give end-users the ability to create parameterized, composable content without imposing the usual abstract and linguistic working style of programmers. We hope that such a system will put the essence of programming into the hands of many more people, and in particular people with artistic/visual creative style. In realizing this vision, we develop algebras for visual presentation and for "deep" function application, where function and argument may both be nested within a structure of tuples, functions, etc. Composition gestures are translated into chains of combinators that act simultaneously on statically typed values and their visualizations.Speaker: Conal ElliottMost of my research is aimed at supporting the creation of interactive synthetic media content, including computer animation, human-computer interaction, images, 2D and 3D geometry, and programmable shaders. In all cases, I aim to preserve or improve on the flexibility and performance of mainstream programming approaches, while greatly simplifying the creation process.Synthetic media programs are almost always implemented in sequential, imperative (often object-oriented) languages. My research explores use of declarative languages, resulting in much simpler and more reusable and composable programs. These languages are also more amenable to execution on parallel architectures such as modern graphics processors, because declarative languages abstract away from order of execution, removing the accidental sequentiality found in imperative programs. Even on sequential machines, declarative formulations have much simpler mathematical semantics, which facilitates automatic optimization. They also tend to be spatially and temporally continuous (resolution-independent), allowing them to adapt naturally to machines with different speeds and display resolutions. After exploring explicit programming of synthetic media content for several years, I'm now also keenly interested in supporting artists. The goal of my new new research agenda is to give artists access to the expressive power of computers and programming languages, while retaining an artist's working style. I mean "artist" in a broad sense, in contrast to the verbal and sequential style of an engineer. (I don't mean to suggest that people fit neatly into these two categories.) My ideal audience includes graphic designers, musicians, and children -- really, the playful and curious in all of us.This abstract has 2796This abstract has 2820
Cincinnati Functional Fitness Session with Dustin CarterI received a call from Scott Goodpaster, the Director of Cincinnati Functional Fitness, to produce a Video of him training one of the most inspiring young men. His name is Dustin Carter. Dustin is a Hillsboro High School Wrestler that has no legs or arms, yet he often wins wrestling tournaments and amazes people through his life. I want to thank Scott for giving my company, Landman Productions the honor of producing a video which will hopefully touch other people's lives when they view this. I know that Scott and Dustin have touched my life, that's for sure!
Alternative Health - Functional MedicineBe My Friend - http://www.myspace.com/psychtruthWhen treating a patient we strive to provide more than just rapid relief of your immediate symptoms. We focus on your overall health examining nutritional, metabolic, immune, hormonal, structural, and any toxicological factors in which you may be involved. Through a personal and comprehensive examination, we try to get to the source of your condition enabling you to restore your health. We also look at emotional and psychological factors as these create the background which shapes every aspect of your health and well-being.Most conditions whether it involves heart disease, fatigue, arthritis, cancer, headaches, chronic infections, allergies, elevated cholesterol, depression, anxiety, PMS, menopause, autism, diabetes, osteoporosis, etc. are manageable if the underlying causes are more fully understood. That doesn't mean we only use the latest fad or herb to cover up your symptoms. Rather, we apply scientific principles in a practical and logical way to solve your medical needs. That means asking the right questions, careful listening, complete examinations of your physical and biochemical state and understanding how you function within your own environment. If necessary, select labs that identify your nutritional needs, allergies, hormonal status, metabolic efficiency, etc. can be performed. When it is all put together, a practical and personalized plan will be agreed upon that is designed to not only get rid of symptoms you don't have to live with but also create a healthier, happier, more vital you.Dr. Vincent BellonziB.S.,D.C.,C.C.N., C.S.C.S., A.C.S.M. Laser Harp Fully Functionalhttp://www.stephenhobley.com/buildNow you can build your own laser harp:http://www.stephenhobley.com/storeFinally got the bugs worked out with the sensor. The harp is driven by an Arduino (Boarduino varation) and connected to the impOSCar VSTi software synthesizer, the TAOS sensor array sits on the floor in it's own stand. The array above the harp i is just made up of fs mirrors for added p'zazz.Complete plans, schematics and source code will be available soon on my website. The harp does respond to hand distance from the sensor, but that can sometimes go awry - so I switched it off for the demo.

Cardinal Planes Functional Orthopedics - 01 - PodiatryDr. Glass DPM - This is an illustration that depicts the cardinal plane movements of the lower extremity. This is a biomechanical demonstration of the functional orthopedic nature of podiatryIn the anatomical lower extremity, there exist three cardinal planes: Sagittal, Frontal, & Transverse. Anatomical motion that occur parallel to these planes are considered to be the dominate motions of that plane. The Horizontal, or Transverse, plane divides the foot in a superior and inferior half. Adduction and Abduction are the motion that occur. Parallel to this plane, adduction is when the foot and leg are medially rotated towards the midline of the body, and Abduction is when the foot and leg are laterally rotated away from the midline. The Frontal, or Coronal, plane divides the foot in to Anterior and Posterior portions. Inversion and Eversion are the motions that occur parallel in this plane. Inversion is when the plantar surface of the foot rotates toward the midline of the body and Eversion is then the plantar surface of the foot rotates away from the midline of the body. The Sagittal plane, which in the foot is approximated to the osteological axis of the 2nd metatarsal, separates the foot in to medial and lateral halves. Parallel to this plane, Dorsiflexion and Plantarflexion refer to the relationship between the surface of the foot and the anterior surface of the leg. Thus dorsiflexion is when the dorsum of the foot moves toward the leg whereas plantarflexion is defined when the dorsal surface of the foot moves away from the leg. It should be noted that process of the walking happens in the sagittal plane. Triplaner motions does not occur in parallel to any of the three cardinal body planes mentioned. It is merely ONE motion consisting of components from all three body planes. This can be demonstrated in the lower extremity by the actions of Pronation and Supination which are triplaner motions. Pronation is a motion of the foot which is comprised of eversion, dorsiflexion, and abduction. With this, the foot is seen to move toward the anterior leg while the toes and plantar surface moving away from the midline. Whereas supination consists of inversion, plantarflexion, and adduction, resulting in the foot to move away from the anterior leg and with the toes and plantar surface moving toward the midline. At a particular joint, in order for a given triplaner motion to be in supination or pronations it must consist of the motions disgust above. The amount of each movement depends of the anatomy of the joint. With that said it is critical to understand that pronation and supination are triplanar motions, but not all triplanar motions are considered pronation or supination.

CS 61A Lecture 2: Functional Programming IICS 61A - Spring 08 - The Structure and Interpretation of Computer ProgramsInstructor Brian HarveyIntroduction to programming and computer science. This course exposes students to techniques of abstraction at several levels: (a) within a programming language, using higher-order functions, manifest types, data-directed programming, and message-passing; (b) between programming languages, using functional and rule-based languages as examples. It also relates these techniques to the practical problems of implementation of languages and algorithms on a von Neumann machine. There are several significant programming projects, programmed in a dialect of the LISP language.http://www.cs.berkeley.edu
