Welcome to ChinaChina has one of the world's oldest people and continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six millennia. It has the world's longest continuously used written language system, and is the source of such major inventions as what the British scholar and biochemist Joseph Needham called the "four great inventions of Ancient China": paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing. Historically China's cultural sphere has been very influential in East Asia as a whole, with Chinese religion, customs, and writing system being adopted, to varying degrees, by its neighbors Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.========Beijingboy1985's E-mail:hsiaowei.sun@gmail.com

Postcard to U.S. President: BeijingPeople in China send their first wishes to the new U.S. President-elect Barak Obama. Many Chinese see Obama as a youthful president-elect with the energy to tackle the financial crisis now threatening their economy. He's also seen carrying an ethnic heritage that could help America reach out to the rest of the world.1. (English) QIU XIAOHUI, STUDENT, SAYING: "Obama, I'm really happy you won. And I hope you can help American people set up more understanding to Chinese. And maybe also help all the people from the world to know what happens in China. It's very important for me"2. (Mandarin) HAN LONG, BUSINESSMAN, SAYING: "Hello Mr. Obama. Two months ago I already knew you would become president of the United States. I have placed so much hope on you. I won't go on and on about how much attention I have paid to you, but I hope when you take over you can sort out the American economy and bring the world economy back up, especially the Chinese economy. I've bought so many stocks and funds, and lately they're just falling, falling, falling. I hope you will exert your influence over the world, Asia and China, so all of us can benefit greatly. This is my hope"3. (English) ZHANG WEIHUI, OFFICE WORKER, SAYING: " I think you are a young president, and you will do a lot of things after you've taking the White House. And I wish, and I think that your colour skin gives you some advantages that will bring hope to a lot of people around the world who are not white skinned. And I hope you will bring help to the world economy and also to the world financial situation.'4. (English) LI QIAN, STUDENT, SAYING: "I hope you can bring new changes into the United States, especially in the special situation, for example in the international financial crisis. I'm very impressed by your slogan in the election, that is "The Change We Need." So I hope your slogan can come true in the next four or eight years in your administration.'

Kung Fu Monks - ChinaMay 2002The Shaolin monks are famous worldwide for their Kung-fu. But there are now fears that their fame is corrupting their ancient Xen Buddhist traditions. ''They try to trick you and get as much money as possible''. says one German student. In every surrounding village there are schools and tourist traps cashing in on their celebrity.
Behind The Boom - ChinaFeb 2007China's economic boom is built on the backs of migrant workers, who flock to the cities in search of work. What are their lives like and are they getting their share of China's new prosperity?Zou Heyen arrived in Shanghai less than a week ago. "I'm not used to life here yet. I feel like jelly after a day's work and I'm not used to the climate", she complains. She shares a cramped room with seven other girls and probably won't see her family, who live four days away, for months. But already, she has no regrets. "At home we didn't have enough to eat. I've experienced hardship so I can bear a lot". Xu Chuanruo is also grateful for the opportunities in Shanghai. He works 12 hours a days, 7 days a week, sweeping streets and rarely sees his wife and children. However, the job pays double what he earned breaking stones in his village and at least now he can support his children through college. "It's a great joy to work hard for my child", he states. "My son won't have to work in the fields". In the cramped worker dormitories, there's a sense of comradeship and shared endeavour. The lives of migrant workers may be difficult but it seems enough for them to know their children will enjoy a better future.

China's Peasant OlympicsChina's 6th Peasant Games are under way this week in the south eastern city of Quanzhou. The Games are dubbed by organisers as "the only regular sports meeting for peasants in the world".
African ChinaThe Evolution of African ChinaFar from being the obvious, since launching himself into the mainstream music world about two years ago, Chinagoro, a.k.a African China, may have stood out as a dependable, yet emerging social crusader of great reckoning. With his name almost becoming a house-hold name in many homes across Africa, African China parades a talent, very prodigious and could be described as "rare and different from what Ojo would refer to above as 'playing the music of destructive values." While storming the music scene with an uncommon tempo, Chinagoro recreates with his craft, the images of reggae singers of yesteryears. With the unceremonious exit of the likes of Majek Fashek, Ras Kimono and The Mandators, all Nigeria's past leading reggae singers, Chinagoro's entrance into the music wavelength of Nigeria appear something like rekindling and re-modelling of the undying spirit of fighting for the oppressed masses through the art of music. His emergence in the Nigerian music scene, no doubt, revolutionizes the myopic, almost streamlined music culture in the country. He came with a bang, and consequently took the stage with a thundering storm. Listening to his kind of music invokes feelings of redemption. One cannot but acknowledge African China's redemptive philosophy which reunites his fans with the rhythms that defined the music of the departed reggae legend, Bob Marley. His high sense of creativity and accomplishment of high quality entertainment and philosophical undertone combined with liberating enlightenment, makes him the hope of tomorrow's reggae icon in the world of the Black race.More than ever before, Chinagoro's kind of reggae possesses an unusual driving force which comforts, arrests and at the same time, refreshes the soul while it encourages and re-arms the people for the great task of making a better society. Like the thought-provoking messages of the departed reggae legend, Bob Marley, and of recent, the South African reggae maestro, Lucky Dube, Chinagoro demonstrates lots of promises for his generation.
