• Leeghwater toen en nu computersDit is het standbeeld van Jan Adriaenszoon Leeghwater. Het staat in het dorp Middenbeemster. Een beroemde naam als we het over droogmakerijen hebben. Maar bij de Beemster heeft hij eigenlijk alleen toezicht gehouden. Pas later bij andere meren was hij zelf de droogmaker. We staan hier in de polder de Schermer, vlakbij de Beemster, we staan hier bij de museummolen. De museummolen is een achtkantige bovenkruier, een binnenbovenkruier, zoals er in Noord-Holland veel gebouwd zijn. Een zogenaamde grondzeiler. Dus de molenaar kan vanaf de grond zijn wieken inklimmen om zijn zeilen vast te maken. En van dit type molens hebben er veel in de Beemster gestaan, 52. Bij het begin van de droogmaking, was het idee, ook bij Leeghwater, van een stuk of twintig molens dan hebben we er wel genoeg aan, maar dat bleek uiteindelijk niet waar te zijn. Door inklinking van de grond moesten molens bijgeplaatst worden, moesten molens verzet worden, en uiteindelijk zijn er zon vijftig stuks geplaatst van dit type molen. De doelstelling natuurlijk van een droogmakerij is om met beperkte middelen zo gauw mogelijk je doel te bereiken, dus het ging hun om die grond. Dus zo gauw mogelijk met zo min mogelijk kosten die grond droog zien te krijgen om daarna te verkopen. Kijk de ervaring over inklinking was er eigenlijk nog niet zo erg op grote meren. Het was jammer dat het grootste meer ook het eerste meer was. Je kon eigenlijk weinig ervaring op doen. We staan hier op de Beemsterdijk. Heel leuk is om te zien dat het hoogteverschil hier tussen de ringvaart en het polderpeil bijna vijf meter is. Het is een gigantisch groot meer geweest, alles wat je hier aan weilanden ziet, is water geweest. En hier op het oude land is dan de ringvaart gegraven en met de uitkomende grond is deze dijk gemaakt. De Beemster werd droog gehouden eeuwenlang door 52 molens. Dat gaat nu anders. Er zijn twee grote gemalen in de Beemster en bij één van die gemalen, daar staan we nu bij, die pompt het water dus uit de Beemster vandaan, in de ringvaart, en van de ringvaart stroomt het water langzamerhand naar een groter gemaal en die perst het water in de Noordzee. De polder de Beemster bestaat ongeveer uit 7200 hectaren verdeeld over een tiental peilvakken, zoals wij dat dan noemen. En die zeventig verschillende peilvakken moeten in deze tijd van het jaar, in het voorjaar, gevuld blijven met water. En in het najaar, of zodra er heel veel regen valt, moet het weer niet te hoog worden.in die vakken. In deze tijd van het jaar wordt er veel water afgenomen dmv sproei-installaties van de tulpenbolindustrie en op dit moment moet ik een beetje improviseren om het water op de juiste plaatsen te krijgen. En dat houdt in dat ik dat, ik noem dat zelf wel eens spelen met water. Ik moet water omleiden om het via A naar B, of via A en B, naar C te krijgen.
